Casinos

So Manchester wins the race to get the first super-casino. Locally that has caused a great deal of disappointment for Blackpool, which saw it as an opportunity for economic regeneration. In many ways, Blackpool is more needy than Manchester, as it is more dependant on tourism.

The problem is, what kind of world are we living in where the only hope for a community is the building of a huge casino? Is it really beyond the ingenuity of developers and entrepreneurs to work out a plan that creates business and economic life that doesn't have the social costs of promoting gambling?
