Oxford Street

Wanted to add my vote to this campaign. It's not that I want a ban, just some responsibility

As a Blackpudlian who has seen the illuminations twice this year I don't really think I can legitimately add my voice to this campaign... It's all about tourism, no tourism, no jobs is what I think.

Mmmmm. I think Oxford Street would probably thrive if they left the light off until 15th Nov, which is what they used to do. How about having them up only for Advent, or from 1 Dec? Hamleys will be busy anyway.

To be perfectly honest, I don't think that Oxford Street lights being switched on a week early are that much to worry about when you consider the number of lights people put outside their houses for the majority of the Christmas period (which usually starts just after Wimbledon fortnight, I think).

Steve.
Welcome to the conversation. I think you're probably right. I wonder if they'll bring out low-energy fairy lights one day?

Do you not think that the huge quantity of fairy lights (especially outside of houses)is just tacky?

Don't get me wrong, I do like some lights but a small degree is self control would probably be a good thing!

As to whether or not it would make any difference: you already know my thoughts.

Or the First Church of Bury My Head In The Sand I Might As Well Do Nothing Seeing As The Difference One Person Will Make Is Miniscule.

If everybody does a little that adds up to a lot, Matthew.

I do think that is a rather harsh summary of my position.

What is more...

I think the perhaps the Church's energy is better invested elsewhere.

Just found some LED low energy Christmas lights to replace the set I can't get spare bulbs for any more. Result!

Cool!

Christmas light are not a problem for Toni and me as we are not allowed to have them in halls of residence anyway! :)

What are you going to have on your Christmas tree then?! I hadn't thought about that!

Bit of tinsel perhaps and some baubles! It'll probably be my first Christmas without the presence of fairly lights somewhere so I dunno how that will feel! But if I can do my little bit for the environment because of some silly rule (which in the scheme of things makes some sense), then all the better. ;)
