Thanks to Bishop Alan's blog for reminding us that Darwin was far from the first to suggest that the early chapters of Genesis should not be taken literally. He points out that Origen (185-254) suggested a figurative meaning in his writings, as did other ancient writers, preferring that over a literal historical account.
