Retro Lamp-posts

A while back, I posted an item about Lancaster's lamp-post adverts for acts performing in the area, especially at the Dome and the Platform, Morecambe. The main point was that it was a time-warp, looking more like a listing from my time at Uni.

It's not disappointing us this month, either. Hawkwind, Stiff Little Fingers, Chris Difford (ex-Squeeze), Wishbone Ash (again) and Midge Ure are the main attractions - oh and Brian Poole and the Tremeloes (original line-up!!). Silence is Golden...

Not 'alf, pop-pickers.

I think this raises the rather more sad and serious point of the North West in neglect from performing arts when compared with the South (L'pool+Manc being obvious exceptions). Been living in Cheltenham for 6 months now, and considering it is a similar size to Lancaster/morecambe, the names that come here are staggering in comparison. Next month for instance sees the literature festival, and no less than 20/30 'A' list celebs will be here plugging their new books, Gordon Brown, John Grisham and George Aligayah to name a few. Whilst I'm obviously pleased, retrospectively it's very saddening that the afore-mentioned plodders on the posters are as good as Lancashire (my home for 6 years)can attract.

Fair comment, Graham. Coventry was just as bad. Everything went to Birmingham

It seems that one of the problems in the North West is acually getting people to attend the decent events when they occasionally happen. I've been to a number of concerts at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester which were very poorly attended.
Without the prospect of decent ticket sales, the A-list artists will continue to miss us off the list.
