I was reminded by a Chaplain colleague of the recent Independent's Red cover. The cross, a Bible verse and Christian imagery on the front of the Indy - whatever next? It's the Red phone I'm struggling with - I'd really like one, but I don't need it. They cost £149, with £10 going to the cause and then 5% of all future call charges. Virgin give a £30 voucher with theirs, so that's £119...
Trouble is, I just replaced my phone (with a cheapie having lost my old one), and I could always just make a donation to an AIDS charity. So, is this covetousness and greed, a virtuous aspiration or just a sad hope that I might be trendy armed with a Motorola SLVR?
Exactly, so is the whole Red thing a sell-out to commercialism or a practical way of levering donations out of a consumerist society? If the latter, should I help set the trend. Think not, so will put it on my Christmas list!
