A black president in the White House

Whatever your political persuasion, you'd have to admit it's a remarkable achievement for Barack Obama to be president-elect of the United States of America. He wasn't the favourite for the nomination, and his election to the presidency was always going to be an historic moment. Within his lifetime (and mine) segregation still existed, yet now an African-American will move into the White House. The irony in that phrase is not lost on me.

Personally I'm delighted he won, not only for policy and direction, but for the proof it gives that US democracy is still alive and well.
