About 6-55 last night there was a power cut, which affected most of Lancaster, certainly from the centre at least as far south as where I live. It was quite disconcerting, as I was alone in the house, upstairs in the cubby hole we like to call an office. In complete darkness I had to make my way downstairs (where all the torches / candles etc are located), which requires a certain amount of care. I was about to leave anyway to get Ellie from Brownies, so a click on the car key fob meant the car lights enabled me to see to lock the front door and get to the car.
Driving through a suburb which is in complete darkness is a very weird experience. There were hardly any other cars on the road I used, and my own lights seemed disproportionately bright. When I got there, the Brownies seemed to be dealing with it in suitable spirit, prepared for anything and with a few emergency lights. Once home, we raided the camping supplies, got candles lit, and even managed to cook El some tea on the cooker hob (once I found some matches to light the gas!).
Power was restored after about an hour - apparently a 33,000V cable had developed a fault. It just showed how dependant we are on our fragile electricity supply
