I thought the spokesperson's comment was bizzarre. Whatever individual people think about the smoking in enclosed public spaces ban, the church should be forthright in it's support of the laws of the land (there is a debate about major issues like the sufragettes but this law is a minor one).

Yes, it had that classic Anglican 'middle way' ring about it. Like you say, observing the law should be strongly endorsed, although there have always been times when Christians have felt called to break the law on particular issues.
